Doing Business Ethically

The purpose of Out of Eden is to be an ethical company - we believe that if we treat everyone we deal with in the right way, in turn both our business and our community will benefit.

Our priorities are serving our customers, looking after our team, treating our suppliers right and minimising our impact on the environment.

By working in the right way we're able to make a profit so that we can give 10% of it to charity every year.

We've been working like this for over 30 years and it has been a source of great strength. It has helped us develop long-term relationships with customers and suppliers, and we have a loyal team committed to serving our customers.

In the short term you can always make a bit more money cutting corners, but in the long term treating people right always wins.

Our Core Values

  • Valuing Our Customers

Quite simply, without customers there is no Out of Eden. We will never take your custom for granted and are always appreciative of your ongoing loyalty. If we do something well, we love it when you tell us. If we don’t always hit the mark then we also appreciate the feedback you provide so that we can put it right and don’t make the same mistake again.

  • Nurturing Our Team

It may be an old cliché that a business is only as good as its people but, it’s true and our people are testament to our growth and success. We will always invest in their personal development and career aspirations and provide well remunerated and fulfilling employment in a friendly and inclusive environment.

  • Involved in Communities

Beautiful Cumbria is our home, it’s where we established the business and it’s where we shall continue to operate from. Our team members all live in the local communities and, as they support us, so we play our part to support them. This support also extends to contributions made to communities and causes on a national and global level.

  • Being Ethical

Our procurement of products isn’t based purely on profit alone and, as far as possible, we endeavour to ensure that they are sourced from manufacturers and brands with ethics aligned to our own. Being ethical includes the environment and our commitment to reducing waste and recycling materials.

  • Being Helpful

We know how stressful it can be to run a hospitality business and you can always call our Customer Services Team for advice on the right products. And if you decide not to buy on this occasion, that’s perfectly fine – we’re still happy to help.

  • Being Profitable

Any business needs to generate a profit in order to continue trading but, for Out of Eden, profit alone has never been our primary purpose. We will always price our products fairly and competitively, and never seek excessive profit at the expense of our customers. Our profit is 'tithed' each year and donated to charities that are important to us.

Sharing Our Profits

Since Out of Eden started in 1993 we have given at least 10% of profit to charity every year to support others less fortunate than us. Our donations are usually split three ways.

We donate to the international charity World Vision and mainly support projects in sub-Saharan Africa like providing people with toilets and clean water.

We have an fund with the Cumbria Community Foundation that supports charities in our local area such as youth centres.

Lastly we have a fund with Stewardship to support Christian charities.

You can find out more about the work we do with World Vision and the Cumbria Community Foundation below.

  • Out of Eden Fund

We have been building our Out of Eden Fund with Cumbria Community Foundation for several years. The income generated by our fund is used to award grants for charitable not-for-profit groups whose projects benefit the communities within the priority area of the fund which includes the Upper Eden Valley, particularly around the 17 parishes included in the Upper Eden Community Plan.

Out of Eden has also pledged six years' support for another fund with the Foundation, Better Tomorrows, which aims to invest approximately £1m into quality youth work, training and provision, with the ultimate objective of substantially increasing the number of young people having access to support from youth workers. It will encourage people within Cumbria to become accredited in youth work via Cumbria Youth Alliance’s training programme.

  • Work with World Vision

International charity World Vision UK (part of the World Vision Partnership) helps transform millions of children's lives through their work in almost 100 countries where the need is greatest. They work in some of the most dangerous places on the planet to help children of all backgrounds, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender. Since 2013 Out of Eden have been proud to support the invaluable work of World Vision UK to transform the lives of children and their families, originally with a three year project in Ethiopia and now in Pajule, Uganda.

World Vision & Out of Eden Annual Report

Our aim is to fund a project from when World Vision are invited to work with a community, seeing it through until the community becomes self-sufficient and World Vision are able to withdraw. We also sponsor Babula, from Boke in eastern Ethiopia. World Vision began working in partnership with his community in 2022 and we will sponsor him until he leaves school.

The Charity Table

"One man's muck, is another man's brass."

The charity table started its humble beginnings years ago with some bin inserts we delisted and were struggling to sell. Janet, one of our founders, was reluctant to just put them in the bin as they were perfectly fine. Instead Janet put the items on a table for customers to take in exchange for a donation and an idea for using them.

It was such a success that the charity table has continued over the years and all donations go into a charity pot. This charity pot is used to support local fundraising efforts, from sponsoring the Brownies, Scouts, local shows or donating to team members' fundraising events.

The charity table still continues today in our showroom, so pop in to see the items or stock that we simply want to be used rather than going to landfill.
